Caring for your Christmas tree
In order to keep your Christmas tree looking healthy for as long as possible, you will need to follow some simple care tips.
Before you position and decorate your tree, take it out of its net wrapping on arriving home and place it in a bucket of water, overnight, in a cool, shady spot outdoors. This allows the branches to settle and rehydrates the tree.
If a day or two passes before you place it in a bucket of water, make a fresh cut at the base of the trunk, by removing a circle of wood about 13-25mm (0.5-1in) thick. This will help the tree absorb water, stay fresh and reduce needle drop.
Give your tree a vigorous shake before taking it inside, to dislodge any old loose needles.
Freshly cut Christmas trees can easily drink a pint of water a day, so we recommend you use a stand with a reservoir which you can top up. Simply fill the bowl with water and keep it topped up to keep your tree fresh for a long time.
If you use a water clamp to hold your tree, make sure it’s big enough. Never peel off the bark to make it fit or the tree will dry out – water is only taken up through the tree in the layers just below the bark.
Choose a cool spot indoors away from radiators, stoves and other heat sources – not always easy at this time of year!
Choose low-heat fairy lights- i.e. LED lights – this will help to prevent the tree from drying out
